"@St6mm Thanks for all this information:-) In Norway we had "husmenn" and very little nobility, rather that larger farms could have "husmenn", who was not bound to the land like a serf and could move to a "husmannsplass" of another farmer. On the other hand a farmer could fire a "husmann" whenever he wanted, to replace an old couple with a young couple, and then this poor old couple had nowhere to go, a cruel aspect with Norwegian "husmannsvesen". It all ended with the pietist movement though, starting with Hans Nielsen Hauge, our most famous pietist, which was a movement to a large part consisting of "husmenn" or our kind of serfs, which gained huge economical and political power during the the 17'th century." - NaturKonservativ
"@Dirck the Dork-Knight You're right, in Western Norway peasants lived in very small villages called "klyngetun", and there were neither overlords as nobles or large farmers/landowners. In Eastern Norway most serfs or "husmenn" were not under a nobleman, but larger farmers. I think mainly around the Oslo Fjord you could find a few noblemen and serfs replicating the European model.
So in the Norwegian villages, or "klyngetun", the farmers were free men, managing their own affairs. Eva Røyrane has written a book about this kind of Norwegian villages, which unfortunately was abandoned by a land reform of 1859 and forward.
Røyrane's book is "Klyngetunet - den norske landsbyen". It should definitely had been translated into English as a testimony of the free villagers in medieval Norway." - NaturKonservativ
